Turner's TV Everywhere Goes Live With Verizon FiOS TV
Turner Broadcasting System has launched online-video services with Verizon FiOS TV offering access to full episodes of TNT and TBS shows within 24 hours of airing on TV. FiOS TV subscribers can access Turner's online programming directly on the "TV Everywhere" sites for TBS (tbs.com/tveverywhere) and TNT (tnt.tv/tveverywhere), logging in using previously registered username and password. If customer log on through the Verizon FiOS TV Online site, they are redirected to Turner's respective network sites. TBS's TV Everywhere site"TBS's TV Everywhere site"Shows currently in rotation on the service include TNT's The Closer, Rizzoli & Isles and Leverage, and TBS's Lopez Tonight, House of Payne and Meet the Browns. Turner expects to launch additional networks in the next few months. Adobe Systems is providing the authentication capability and media-streaming for the Turner services via its Flash platform. The programmer also is using ad-serving network FreeWheel, which Turner said it will use to "complement" Nielsen measurement of C3 video (linear, online, VOD) beginning in September. "We are excited about this deployment and the next iteration of authenticated multiscreen content distribution," TBS vice chairman Andy Heller said in a statement. "It is more imperative than ever that TV Everywhere gains traction throughout the industry given the rapid deployment of tablets and the ability of mobile devices to display long-form video directly from Web sites." Advertisers currently featured on TBS's TV Everywhere service include Unilever's Dove soap, while TNT's is running ads for Mars' M&Ms. The TNT version provides a "boss button," which pauses the video and display a bogus spreadsheet in its place; TBS has one too, labeled "panic." Turner's TV Everywhere services also provide options to create a playlist; view content in full-screen mode; and watch in "HD," although it isn't clear what bit rate the video is being delivered. Verizon, in addition to the Turner networks, has said it is working to add a number of content providers to its TV Everywhere service, including Fox News, CBS, MTV Networks, Hallmark Channel, Smithsonian Channel and the Tennis Channel. FiOS TV Online already offers the TV Everywhere services offered by HBO and Epix, a joint venture of MGM, Paramount Pictures and Lions Gate Entertainment. In a related development, Turner's parent company, Time Warner Inc., has filed for trademark protection on the term "On Demand Everywhere" and has registered the OnDemandEverywhere.com domain name.

Comcast/NBCU Support Comment Deadline Extension
Comcast and NBC Universal support the request by the American Cable Association and other critics of the deal for a two-week extension of the Federal Communications Commission deadline for comment on their 599-page defense of their proposed joint venture. Comcast confirms that it plans to tell the FCC Wednesday that it has no problem giving them the extra two weeks - -until Aug. 19 -- but with the expectation that the agency will not stop its shot clock on review of the deal, which gives the commission until the end of August to vet the deal, though the clock is informal. The American Cable Association and other small and midsized telcos requested the extra days, saying they were not enough time to go over the document. Comcast points out that the extra two weeks will give those parties about the same amount of time it had to comment on the numerous filings in initial comments. Initial comments were due June 21, and Comcast's response was due July 21.

HSN Secures 'Shop by Remote' Patent
Two days after rival QVC disclosed plans to offer an interactive TV shopping application, HSN announced that earlier this month it was awarded a patent covering aspects of its own Shop by Remote service. HSN was awarded U.S. Patent No. 7,752,083, "System for Improved Interactive Television Processing," on July 6, 2010. The patent covers many of the proprietary aspects of the HSN Shop by Remote platform, according to the shopping channel, and provides for a "transactional environment" between a server and one or more display devices. "We intend to explore all appropriate business strategies to generate value from the issued patents, which may include direct monetization via non-exclusive licensing arrangements," John McDevitt, vice president of advanced services for HSN, said in a statement. HSN Shop by Remote"HSN Shop by Remote"HSN's Shop by Remote app, launched in 2006, is currently available in more than 30 million homes through Comcast -- which has enabled the app for 14 million subscribers to date -- as well as Dish Network, Verizon Communications' FiOS TV and Time Warner Cable Oceanic in Hawaii. QVC is working with interactive-TV developer Ensequence on an on-screen shopping application based on CableLabs Enhanced TV Binary Interchange Format specification. The companies had said they expected to deploy their T-commerce app with Comcast sometime in early 2011, but earlier this week the MSO said it is only considering the QVC app and does not have specific deployment plans at this point. Meanwhile, although Ensequence had previously developed an EBIF-based "Shop by Remote" application for HSN in 2008, according to HSN it has not been activated with a distributor. The EBIF app HSN has deployed with Comcast was developed by Ericsson. In addition to the patent covering "Shop by Remote," HSN has been awarded U.S. Patent No. 7,756,758, "Method and System for Improved E-Commerce Shopping," which covers presentation of multiple video product presentations via a live feed as well as related prerecorded segments. HSN, based in St. Petersburg, Fla., is an operating segment of HSN Inc., which is 33% owned by Liberty Media. Liberty owns 100% of QVC.

In her new role, Powers also will help shape the company's strategy around new initiatives such as 3D. Previously, Powers helped to set up a framework for a new business model with affiliated stations, and secured a VOD film deal with hotel aggregator LodgeNet. Her new responsibilities notwithstanding, Powers will continue to support the TV Networks Distribution team on negotiations. She continues to report to Jennifer Pirot, vice president, digital distribution. Trullinger, as director, Digital Distribution & TV Networks Distribution, will continue to manage the New England and Caribbean territories in the field, while adding out-of-home distribution to his responsibilities. In his new role, Brad will continue to manage his territory in the East Region, reporting to McCallion, and will expand NBC Universal's OOH business by securing distribution for the company's cable networks in outlets such as financial institutions and retail outlets, reporting to Pirot.

History Enters 3D Orbit with DirecTV
Will broadcast The Universe on "n3D" channel Cable programmer History, a unit of A&E Television Networks, will deliver its first stereoscopic 3D broadcast this Friday, July 30, by airing a 3D version of the season five premiere episode of its series, The Universe, on pay-TV operator DirecTV. History's 3D broadcast will be shown at 10 p.m. ET/PT on DirecTV's new 3D channel, "n3D", which is sponsored by set-maker Panasonic. On the same day, DirecTV will also offer a 2D version of this episode on The 101 Network. The season five premiere of The Universe, titled "Seven Wonders of the Solar System," was natively produced in 3D by Flight 33 Productions, which shot interviews and B-roll with 3D camera rigs and generated the show's 3D animations in-house. Technicolor provided stereoscopic encoding for the program. The show makes extensive use of CGI graphics to visualize recent findings from the latest space probes and examines various marvels of the universe including mountain ranges on Saturn's rings and the famous red spot on Jupiter. It also includes what History describes as the highest resolution images ever taken of the lava flow on Mars that might indicate volcanic activity. "Offering this programming in 3D will enable our viewers to completely immerse their senses in the uncharted landscape that makes up our solar system," said Derek Chang, EVP of content strategy and development for DirecTV, in a statement. "This is the type of programming that lends itself perfectly for 3D and still looks amazing in HD. We are excited to be partnering with History as they embark on their first 3D mission and look forward to continuing to deliver compelling 3D content to our viewers." "This is a great opportunity for History to partner with DirecTV to showcase our hit series The Universe in 3D," added David Zagin, EVP of distribution for AETN. "The 3D experience greatly enhances the graphics of The Universe and adds an exciting new element to History's programming."
